Nice Junior results at Page Valley and Luray

In extremely hot conditions (what's new this summer) on a very tough road race course, Buddy Wilcox pulled in a 7th place finish, his brother Josh - soon to be 15 - took 15th and Michael better took 52nd. The were only 64 finishers as the heat and the course quickly took a toll on the riders. Nice job boys! The following day also in hot conditions, Godfrey Furchtgott won the Luray Crit. The heat was the biggest factor as the 60 odd racers were whittled down to 15 finishers. Congratulations Godfrey on the win - we hope your parents enjoy the bottle of wine you won!

Artemis Celebrates Another Solid Season

As our 10th racing season comes to a close, we are thrilled with our success! It looks like we currently have a solid lead on securing the 2009 MABRA TEAM BAR win over 2 other very large and competitive clubs for the 2nd year in a row. The level of our riders is growing, as well. Artemis has 2 women (Erin, Amanda) who have upgraded to the category 1 level, while DJ Jorge advance to Category 2. Jessica Dana upgraded to Category 3, while our favorite Coach, BJ, earned his USAC Level 1 Coaching certification. Wow, congrats to them on their accomplishments!Frank, our Junior Coach, has taken his athletes up to the next level. By providing those in need with loaner bicycles and a regimented training program, they are exposed to a sport that will last them a lifetime. It was *amazing* to see nine 10-14 year-old Artemis Girls race at Turkey Day! Although in its early stages, we hope to see some top riders (both boys and girls) rise from this program. After promoting 2 race events this year and a few “mini-clinics”, we still have our “Introduction to Racing” clinic ahead. More of us are turning to Cyclocross this season…just for fun! Look on our Calendar for more fun rides during the Fall through Spring, as we gear up for yet another race season!

Artemis Women Dominate MABRA Crit Championships!

Congratulations to both ERIN and JESSICA for capturing the Crit Championship (http://www.herald-mail.com/?cmd=displaystory-comments story_id=226711) wins held on the streets of the historic neighborhood of Hagerstown on Saturday. Erin, with her 1st race as a newly earned Cat 1, stayed away with another rider for most of the race with a huge lead from the field. The other rider clearly showed fatigue, but Erin kept her on board and then took the win. Although Jessica was outnumbered by other teams and several strong riders, she was able to squeak out the win with a full-on sprint finish! But, for Erin, that wasn’t enough. She headed to PA for the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium, an NRC race drawing many of the pro riders. Erin looked comfortable in the picture that made Velo News! She finished a respectable 20th in the field. Then, on Sunday we had our 2nd race of the season on a newly revised course: Dawg Days of Summer. Despite predictions for showers, the day was sunny hot (not common thus far this summer), but thankfully there was a strong breeze to keep things cool…and add a challenge to the race. Early in the day, Jerry “Freight Train” McCallop took advantage of a finish-line calamity in the 35+ 4/5 race and took 2nd place. (Thankfully, no one was seriously injured). Then came the Cat 4 Women’s event, where Jessica again, unleashes (woof) her newly-found sprint and wins from 3rd position. Perfect! Another win came from Mark Warno. He took the win solo in the 35+ Masters race, with “Big Daddy” Osborne winning the field sprint for 2nd. Amanda was in a 3-person break in the Women’s field and took a 3rd place finish for Artemis. All in all, a *great* day, with MANY thanks to District Velocity Racing/Bike Rack for their invaluable help and coordination in putting on this event!
