Although Artemis is dedicated to promoting and supporting women in bicycle racing, we also fully support male and Junior (ages 10-18) racer development.  Artemis enjoys the diversity of its members.  Artemis team members are located throughout the Baltimore-Washington-Virginia Metropolitan area (and beyond…see Artemis Puerto Rico!), where they can be found racing and training as a group on regional roads year-round.  Our riders are recognized and well known and well respected in the Mid-Atlantic region, a reputation of which we are proud.  We still believe in giving back to the cycling community via grassroots development, leadership, and education.

Our efforts and accomplishments have been recognized by our national governing body, the United States Cycling Federation (USCF).  We received the Women’s Club of the Year Awardin 2000 & 2001, and the more prestigious Club of the Year Award for 2003 and 2004!

The Metropolitan area is brimming with both competitive and recreational cyclists.  As a result, over 30 local and nationally recognized races are held in the MD/DC/VA area each year.  Our team members put their training to the test by racing every weekend from April through September. We also travel to national and international events, and to one of our nation’s premier track racing establishments the Lehigh Valley Velodrome in Trexlertown, PA, bringing unusual depth to our race schedule.

Teaching Others

We believe it is important not only to race well for ourselves, but also to give back to our community by supporting various cycling activities and events. During the off-season (November through March) we lead training rides geared for women cyclists and novice men who want learn more about racing while improving their fitness and skills.  Members of Artemis offer experience and support to anyone who is interested in starting to bike race. To do this, we hold clinics that focus on improving specific skills important in racing safely, as well as the basic training knowledge needed to perform well and win.  The fall Artemis Introduction to Racing Clinic was featured in the October, 2006 edition of Bicycling Magazine.

In addition to the commradery that we already share at the races,  Artemis members enjoy informal get-togethers off the bike, such as “Retreats” to the beach, mountains, and other locations for training, dinners, and anything else fun that might come up!  We feel this will foster an encouraging environment where women (and others) can gain confidence and new skills both on and off the bike.

Our mission is not exclusive to the support of women bike racers.  We reach out to the huge cycling community of recreational cyclists in the region by volunteering our time, skill, and knowledge to promote a safe and healthy activity for bike riders at any level.  Year round, Artemis members can be found helping out at Kid’s Safety Rodeos, charity bike rides (AIDS Ride, MS, WABA), and other bicycle related events, as well as teaching or speaking at basic programs for cyclists in the community.
