| The Artemis junior program is a year round cycling racing program. Our junior team has over 50 junior cyclists that compete in road races, criteriums, time trials, cyclocross and mountain bike races. Our primary training occurs in Bethesda and Chevy Chase and is made up of members from Washington DC, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville, Potomac, Gaithersburg, Chevy Chase and Olney. When it gets cold, we go inside and spin at the Bethesda SportandHealth. There we add myofascial release, stretching, core and plyometrics regimens that are focused on cycling. We are a race team, so we focus on the skills that are required to race namely bike handling, riding in a peloton as well at the aerobic and anaerobic conditioning required for cycling. Nice job Sophie Mittelstadt, Svetlana Mack and Nastya Mack taking 1, 2, 4 at MABRA Track Championships in the 14&U category.
Saturday night at Trexlertown had a nice women's field of 26, Sophie, 12, did great following fellow Artemisian Bonnie Fletcher-Price and finished 16th. A good omen for things on Sunday.
Sunday was the MABRA Track Championships, the three girls first did the 200m TT, Sophie came in at 15.4 and Svetlana, age 11, had a 18.5. In the 500m TT Sophie had 47.15 and Svetlana had a 54.04. The real fun came when the girls raced with the Women and Masters Women in the combined points race. Sophie came in second in the sprint and 3rd overall.
Kudos to AMVC/DND Inc., Prince William Elite Racing, and Suburban Health Sports/Saroff Racing for putting on a great venue. Running an 8 hour event is never easy! |

In extremely hot conditions (what's new this summer) on a very tough road race course, Buddy Wilcox pulled in a 7th place finish, his brother Josh - soon to be 15 - took 15th and Michael better took 52nd. The were only 64 finishers as the heat and the course quickly took a toll on the riders. Nice job boys! The following day also in hot conditions, Godfrey Furchtgott won the Luray Crit. The heat was the biggest factor as the 60 odd racers were whittled down to 15 finishers. Congratulations Godfrey on the win - we hope your parents enjoy the bottle of wine you won! |

Our first experience at USAC Track Nationals Sophie Mittelstadt and Svetlana Mack with coaching provided by Kim Geist became our experiment to see if we could compete in Track given our distance from a velodrome. Nice job to Sophie and Svetlana for all their efforts (and travel over many days to Trexlertown), you girls make us proud! Day 1 - Congrats go out to Sophie and Svetlana for both finishing in the top 10 in their respective 500m time trials at Junior Track Nationals. Both Svetlana and Sophie posted personal bests, nice!
Day 2 - Svetlana moved up a couple of notches in her 1K Scratch race and placed 9th in the final. Sophie placed 6th in her 2K Scratch Final. She made her move on the 3rd to last lap and was in the lead until the last lap, just missing a podium spot.
Day 3 - In her points race, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Points_race) Sophie took the first sprint and then went to early on the second sprint and took 7th. In her 2K scratch race, Svetlana got to watch a crash up close (but not personal) the race reconvened and she took 8th. |

Day 1 - Podium
Nathan Lebauer was the first Artemis racer off on the road race at 9 a.m. In his first road race he was almost immediately caught up in a crash, got up, put his chain back on had his handlebars bent back in place and caught the second peloton and finished 14th in the 12&U boys.
Claire van Ekdom was next at 10 a.m., stuck in the pack until a downhill breakaway of three (including last year's national champ) got away. She soloed away from the main pack to take 4th and a podium spot in the 12-14 girls
Shaner Lebauer was last off at 11:30, lost the breakaway but finished 8th out of 71 in the 13-14 boys.
A terrific showing for Artemis at Nationals!
Day 2 - Not a kind day
Nathan again was the first Artemis racer off on a very tight technical crit. Nathan again was involved in a crash when one of the 10-12 riders on the inside couldn't navigate the turn and ran into Nathan. Nathan got up again fixed his chain and took off, this time though his brakes were rubbing...Race over.
Claire was the next rider up. One girl soloed away from the pack. Claire was in the pack finish but finished 7th. Why? As Claire put it, position, position, position.
Shaner was the last of the three to go. He had a bad starting position a poor clip-in and never really got going before they started pulling racers.
Day 3 - Truth TTs at Nationals. Without the benefit of TT bikes or TT helmets the kids had some awesome results.
Nathan 17th place
Claire 6th place
Shaner 36th place |
